Scar Compression Treatment
Clinical studies have shown that compression (pressure) and occlusion (closure against drying out) promote scar healing. All Otto Bock Silicon House products are based on the combination of these compression and occlusion treatment methods.
The scar tissue is enclosed and simultaneously compressed. The silicone retains moisture in the skin, making the skin more elastic and flexible to react to the compression. The two treatment methods thus enhance one another.
Pads
Concave body regions (e.g. between the shoulder blades or breasts) are not optimally fitted with conventional knitted compression bandages. Pads are more suitable for these regions as they fill out the hollow spaces. They are worn under the compression clothing and are attached with Velcro fasteners.
Gloves
Silicone is an ideal material for compression treatments for the hand as its compression qualities do not wear out. Additional pads allow to compress the spaces between the fingers. The glove is easily cleaned with soap and water.
Collars
In the neck area, compression and extension must work together on the scar and skin without putting pressure on sensitive areas such as the larynx. A collar made of silicone can offer both of these effects without having the uncomfortable rigidity of plastic.
Masks
Our face is comprised of concave (e.g. next to the nose) and convex surfaces. Moreover, it has diverse soft tissues as, for example, the cheek area. Conventional compression bandages usually place too much strain on concave regions, whereas soft tissue regions give way to the pressure of the compression mask.
These disadvantages of compression treatment often lead to the formation of hypertrophic scars or keloids, which require surgical correction.
