Energy and comfort
Get Both with the Otto Bock 1C40 C-Walk

Users want a prosthetic foot that provides true comfort. Yet they don't want to sacrifice a high degree of dynamic response.

Sizes 24-25 Sizes 26-30

Carbon spring feet offer high energy return. However, of equal importance to users is how that energy is returned during specific phases of the gait cycle.

Current day demands on carbon spring feet include walking at different speeds, walking uphill or downhill, and a secure, harmonious roll-over on uneven ground. With the C-Walk®, patients of all ages can meet these and many more challenges.

The C-Walk® - a new generation of dynamic response feet with an innovative design !

C-Walk® technology
In the C-Walk®, the carbon spring and base spring are dynamically coupled with a control ring. This systematic interplay allows for comfortable and dynamic walking. During each phase of gait, the energy efficiency created by this combination ensures a physiological and harmonious roll-over.

Phase 1:
At heel strike, the heel component acts as a lever and compresses the C-spring. This provides a cushioning and a rapid ground contact of the forefoot through the base spring. At heel strike, the base spring creates a pronounced plantar flexion. The rapid contact of the forefoot provides for stability following the taking on of weight.

Phase 2:
During mid-stance phase, the C-spring relaxes and supports the roll-over with its stored energy. The opening of the C-spring is then regulated with the control ring, which progressively increases the resistance of the forefoot in the base spring.

Phase 3:
The base spring stores this energy that is later released during the transition to the swing phase. This "lengthy" support – both in terms of time and in terms of length of the base spring – creates a smooth transition from the prosthetic leg to the contralateral leg.

Benefits:
- Large, controlled plantar flexion up to 12°
- Multi-axis motion to compensate for uneven ground
- Reduced strain on sound leg
- Cushioned heel strike
- Physiological roll-over
- Harmonious transition from stance phase to swing phase
- Comfortable walking uphill and downhill

The interplay of C-spring and base spring is determined by the control ring. The graph illustrates the ring's function that leads to a progressive spring characteristic.

For patients of the same foot size, the C-spring functions similarly regardless of weight. This is because the control ring regulates the stiffness via the movement, which results in the progressive spring characteristic.

If any of these factors change (e.g. increased body weight or different levels of activity) the difference of the ankle displacement decreases with a progressive spring characteristic (1). By contrast, conventional carbon spring feet with linear spring characteristic (2) are altered with changing patient weight. The change is so substantial that it can only be compensated for with a customised combination of spring resistance.

Seven sizes - One principle

Based on the analysis of anthropometric data such as weight, leg length and foot size, a systematic pre-selection of suitable spring stiffnesses was determined for each foot size. As such, foot sizes 24 to 30 can be fitted for body weights ranging between 45 and 100 kg for mobility levels 3 and 4.

The C-Walk® Cosmetic Foot Shell

The C-Walk® offers numerous benefits and an appealing look due to its attractive and functional cosmetic foot shell.

The foam connection cap connects the cosmetic foot shell and cosmetic cover and is detachable at any time.

The systematic solution for the complexities of everyday life. At each step. Because daily life represents a permanent challenge, whether standing, walking or jogging.
